Course Overview

Illegible handwriting and difficulty controlling a pen are common post-stroke. Little research has been published to guide therapists who retrain handwriting in adults (or children).  Typical exercises involve non-specific copying of letters and lines of text. Furthermore, few outcome measures target the adult population.  This presentation will summarize Australian-led research which explored handwriting behavior, legibility and speed norms in healthy older adults (age-matched to stroke survivors), developed the Handwriting Assessment Battery, and evaluated the feasibility of a 2-week handwriting retraining program for stroke survivors.

The online class is intended for medical professionals (e.g. OT/OTA, PT/PTA, Physicians, etc.) directly related to the rehabilitation of a patient or client. To participate in this CEU and receive credit, the participant must be a licensed, treating clinician. Completion of this course will reward the participant with .1 CEUs or 1 contact hours, following completion of the presentation and a ≥ 80% score on the quiz. You will have 90 days to complete this course.

Some of the Questions Answered in this Course Include:

  • What does the current research actually say about the effectiveness of adult handwriting interventions after stroke or ABI?

  • How should adult handwriting be analyzed and measured in a clinically meaningful way?

  • How do you properly administer and interpret the Handwriting Assessment Battery (HAB) for adults?

  • What does “normal” handwriting speed and legibility look like in healthy older adults, and how should this inform goal setting post-stroke?

  • What task-specific retraining strategies are most effective for improving adult handwriting after stroke or acquired brain injury?
